Teachings Around the Sacred Fire with Perry Ground
Sunday 11 September 8am Following the Sunrise Ceremony — Around the Sacred Fire in the Backyard at FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre
A sacred fire will burn from Friday at dawn until the close of Celebration of Nations in the backyard of the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre.
This teaching discusses the role that Women play in Haudenosaunee communities throughout history. Sharing the Creation Story and SkyWoman teachings, the talk will highlight the important responsibilities women have within the culture, government, and communities of the Haudenosaunee. Conversations about these responsibilities and freedoms, and comparing them to those of American women in history, will help participants understand the role that Haudenosaunee women played in influencing the ideas of early suffragists. Connections to modern traditions and issues, such as the MMIW movement, will be discussed as well.
