Participants will learn traditional uses for birch bark, how to say words related to birch bark making in Anishinaabemowin and will complete their own simple birch bark basket to take home.
Open to all, 10 years of age and older.
Nikki Shawana
Nikki Shawana is Odawa and Potowatomi from the Wiikwemkoong Unceded Indian Reserve on Manitoulin Island. Nikki was born and raised in Southern Ontario spending most of her childhood in Niagara Falls. She spent a lot of time at the For Erie Native Friendship Centre and Niagara Regional Native Centre where she learned about her culture, pow wow dancing and pow wow singing. By practicing and sharing the teachings she was given, Nikki became a role model for others in the community who wanted to learn more about their culture. Today, Nikki travels throughout Ontario to teach people about Indigenous culture through the arts. www.thebirchcanoe.com
